Tunisia Sack Sabri Lamouchi After Sweden Defeat as Mondher Kebaier Set to Take Charge
Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Lamouchi becomes the first manager to lose his job at this year’s tournament after the Carthage Eagles suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening fixture.
The defeat reportedly led to an immediate review of the team’s direction, with the Tunisian Football Federation deciding to make a change as they look to revive their World Cup hopes.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on X, stating that Lamouchi had been sacked after the opening-game loss and that plans were already in place to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the new coach on an interim basis.
“Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi has been sacked after defeat in World Cup opening game against Sweden. Plans are under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the new national team coach on an interim basis, Federation confirm,” Romano wrote.
Lamouchi’s departure highlights the intense pressure surrounding international managers during major tournaments, where one poor result can quickly bring uncertainty.
For Tunisia, the focus now shifts to Kebaier and whether he can steady the team, rebuild confidence, and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
The decision also serves as an early reminder of the unforgiving nature of tournament football — where expectations are high and coaches often carry the weight of a nation’s disappointment.
