“Our Children Deserve to Feel Safe” — Funke Akindele Speaks Out on Oyo Abduction Crisis
Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has joined the growing list of celebrities raising concerns over the reported abduction of children and teachers in Oyo State, calling on authorities to take urgent action to improve security in schools and communities.
Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) page, the actress expressed deep sadness over the situation, describing the incident as heartbreaking and unacceptable.
According to Funke Akindele, children should be able to attend school without fear, while parents deserve the assurance that their loved ones are safe.
“DAYS ARE COUNTING!!! This is so heartbreaking. Our children deserve to feel safe in school, and parents deserve peace of mind. The government needs to do more to protect our children and secure our schools. No family should have to live with this kind of fear.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families. May these children return home safely. Amen,” she wrote.
Her comments come amid increasing public outrage over insecurity and reports of kidnappings affecting schools and communities across parts of the country.
Funke's statement echoes similar concerns raised by fellow Nollywood stars, including Lateef Adedimeji, who recently urged authorities to address the worsening security situation. The actor questioned how election campaigns could continue as normal while families remain distressed over the fate of abducted children.
Actor Kunle Remi also lamented what he described as society's growing tendency to move on quickly from tragic events, warning against becoming numb to human suffering.
Other public figures, including Toyin Abraham, Bobrisky, Ruth Kadiri, Yvonne Jegede, and Lala Akindoju, have also publicly expressed concern over insecurity and the safety of citizens.
As calls for stronger security measures continue to grow, many Nigerians are hoping for swift action to ensure the safe return of those affected and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Opinion: When Celebrities Speak, the Nation Listens
Funke Akindele's reaction reflects a sentiment shared by many Nigerians: concern for the safety of children should never become a political or partisan issue. Regardless of background, religion, or political affiliation, every parent wants the same thing—the assurance that their children can go to school and return home safely.
While celebrities may not have the power to solve security challenges, their voices often help keep important issues in the public spotlight. In a media environment frequently dominated by entertainment and trending controversies, statements like Funke's help redirect attention to matters affecting ordinary citizens.
However, beyond social media posts and public outrage, many Nigerians are increasingly demanding concrete solutions. Expressions of sympathy are important, but long-term security reforms, improved intelligence gathering, community policing, and better protection for schools are what many citizens hope to see.
The growing number of entertainers speaking out also sends a message that public figures are not disconnected from the realities affecting their audiences. Their concern reflects the collective anxiety of a nation where many families simply want to live, work, and educate their children without fear.
As the days pass, the hope remains that every affected child and teacher will return safely to their families. Until then, the calls for stronger action and accountability are unlikely to fade.
