“Wumi Toriola Is Better Than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, Toyin Abraham” — Film Critic Sparks Nollywood Debate

“Wumi Toriola Is Better Than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, Toyin Abraham” — Film Critic Sparks Nollywood Debate

Nollywood film critic and radio broadcaster Tolu Fagbure has sparked a fresh debate in the Nigerian movie industry after boldly declaring that actress Wumi Toriola ranks above some of the biggest names in Nollywood when it comes to acting.

Speaking in a recent interview, Fagbure praised Toriola’s acting ability, describing her as better than popular actresses Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Toyin Abraham in terms of performance. He also described her as one of the wisest figures among her colleagues.

According to him, Toriola’s approach to filmmaking shows maturity, especially with her decision not to take full credit as a producer for her movie Queen Latifa. He argued that hiring professionals for areas outside her strength demonstrated wisdom and better judgment.

“Wumi Toriola is better than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Toyin Abraham put together when it comes to acting, and she’s the wisest of them all,” Fagbure stated.

The comment has naturally generated reactions among movie lovers, as Nollywood fans continue to compare the strengths and achievements of some of the industry’s leading actresses.

While Funke Akindele has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s biggest box office forces, Toyin Abraham and Mercy Aigbe have also established themselves as successful actresses and filmmakers. However, Fagbure’s statement highlights a growing conversation in Nollywood — that commercial success and acting excellence are not always measured by the same standards.

Toriola, meanwhile, has continued to prove her relevance in the industry. Her recent projects have strengthened her position, with her cinema debut making a notable impact. Her movie success also earned her recognition, including a box office award from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

Beyond the debate over who is “better,” the conversation reflects a changing Nollywood landscape where actors are increasingly judged not only by popularity but also by storytelling ability, production choices, and consistency.

In an industry filled with different talents and achievements, opinions like Fagbure’s may create arguments, but they also remind audiences that Nollywood’s growth has been driven by the contributions of many stars — each bringing something unique to the screen.
