Arsenal's pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has encountered its first major obstacle after the Magpies rejected the Gunners' opening offer for the Brazilian midfielder.

According to reports from Sky Sports, the Premier League champions remain determined to complete the signing and are now engaged in direct negotiations with Newcastle in an effort to reach an agreement.

Following the rejection of their initial proposal, Arsenal's hierarchy is reportedly considering whether to return with an improved bid as they continue their search for midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season.

Guimarães, who has returned to Newcastle's pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, is said to have already informed club officials of his desire to join Arsenal this summer.

That said, Newcastle remain in a strong negotiating position because of the Brazilian's contract situation.
