Ben Iroha Went From USA '94 To Running A Business In Dallas

Sports

Ben Iroha played left back for the Super Eagles at the 1994 World Cup, in the squad that is still the benchmark for every side since. He now runs a business in Dallas, Texas. The account of how one became the other is worth more than the nostalgia around it.

The generation that had to build something else

Players from the 1994 squad earned well by Nigerian standards and almost nothing by the standards of the players who followed them a decade later. There were no image rights worth the name, no post-career media industry to absorb them, and no federation pension. Whatever they did next, they largely built from scratch.

Where the 1994 generation wentHow common
Business, often abroadThe most common outcome
Coaching in NigeriaA handful, usually briefly
Football administrationRarer, and contested
Punditry and mediaOnly the most visible names

Very few stayed inside the game that made them famous.

Why that matters beyond nostalgia. Nigeria keeps asking why its football administration lacks people who have played at the top level. Part of the answer is that the generation best placed to provide them found more reliable work in other countries and other industries, and nobody at home built a reason for them to stay.
Nigeria celebrates 1994 every June and has never built a route for the men who made it to work in the game afterwards.

The thing worth taking from it

Iroha's story is not a decline. A former international running a successful business is a good outcome by any measure. The loss is Nigerian football's, which spent thirty years producing men with priceless experience of what winning looks like, and then gave almost none of them a job.
