Ben Iroha played left back for the Super Eagles at the 1994 World Cup, in the squad that is still the benchmark for every side since. He now runs a business in Dallas, Texas. The account of how one became the other is worth more than the nostalgia around it.
The generation that had to build something else
Players from the 1994 squad earned well by Nigerian standards and almost nothing by the standards of the players who followed them a decade later. There were no image rights worth the name, no post-career media industry to absorb them, and no federation pension. Whatever they did next, they largely built from scratch.

Iroha's story is not a decline. A former international running a successful business is a good outcome by any measure. The loss is Nigerian football's, which spent thirty years producing men with priceless experience of what winning looks like, and then gave almost none of them a job.
