NPFL Reprimands Akwa United Over Incident Involving Broadcast Crew

NPFL Reprimands Akwa United Over Incident Involving Broadcast Crew

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a stern warning to Akwa United following the alleged harassment and intimidation of the broadcast crew of its OTT partner, Propel Sports Africa. The incident reportedly occurred after Akwa United’s matchday 16 clash against Bendel Insurance on December 10, 2024, in Uyo.

The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, disclosed the development in a formal letter titled “Warning on Unprofessional Conduct of Club Officials.”

The letter revealed that Akwa United’s Welfare Officer, identified as Mr. Asuquo, played a key role in the altercation, which targeted the technical staff of Propel Sports Africa. The broadcast partner provides coverage of NPFL matches, serving as a crucial medium for promoting the league to a wider audience.

“Acts of this nature expose the league to significant legal risks, reputation damage, and financial costs,” Owumi stated in the letter. To address the situation, Mr. Asuquo has been summoned to appear before a disciplinary panel to explain his actions and clarify the club’s position on the matter.

Repercussions for the League

The NPFL has stressed the gravity of such incidents, which not only tarnish the reputation of the league but also threaten partnerships that are vital for its growth and sustainability. Propel Sports Africa’s collaboration with the NPFL has been pivotal in enhancing visibility and attracting sponsorship, making any interference with its operations a serious matter.

Opinion: Safeguarding the League’s Integrity

This incident serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in the NPFL to prioritize professionalism and respect for partnerships. While passion and emotions often run high in football, maintaining a cordial relationship with media and broadcast partners is non-negotiable for the league’s progress.

Akwa United, as a prominent NPFL club, bears a responsibility to set an example both on and off the pitch. Addressing this incident swiftly and transparently will not only reaffirm the NPFL’s commitment to maintaining high standards but also ensure such occurrences do not recur.

In the long run, the league must implement proactive measures, including training programs for club officials, to instill the importance of media relations and professional conduct. These steps will help to safeguard the NPFL’s credibility, enhance its appeal, and solidify its standing as a competitive and globally respected football league.

As Akwa United prepares to address the disciplinary panel, fans and stakeholders will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that underscores accountability and reinforces the league's dedication to excellence.
