Sevilla Coach Almeyda Backs Akor Adams Despite Goal Drought and Fan Backlash

Sevilla Coach Almeyda Backs Akor Adams Despite Goal Drought and Fan Backlash

Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda has thrown his support behind Nigerian striker Akor Adams, who is currently enduring a difficult spell in front of goal, TalkTalk Nigeria reports.

Akor, who joined Sevilla with high expectations, has now gone eight straight LaLiga games without scoring for the Rojiblancos. His struggles have been further highlighted by an unusual statistic: he has been caught offside 22 times this season—more than any player across Europe’s top five leagues.

The mounting pressure from fans has taken a toll. The 25-year-old was forced to switch off the comments section on his X (Twitter) account this week after facing waves of cyberbullying from frustrated supporters.

Despite the criticism, Almeyda remains confident in the forward’s potential and insists he is on the right path.

“He is a footballer who works a lot and needs confidence. I prefer that he is trying to right his wrongs rather than standing still,” the Argentine manager told Orgullobiri.

Akor has so far scored two goals and provided one assist in 12 league appearances this season.

Opinion: Sevilla Fans Must Remember—Strikers Grow Stronger With Support, Not Abuse

Football is emotional, and goal droughts can test everyone’s patience—fans, coaches, and even the players themselves. But the treatment Akor Adams has received online crosses the line from criticism into cruelty.

Cyberbullying a player who is already struggling doesn’t fix anything; it only deepens the problem.

Akor’s offside stats may be alarming, but they also tell a story:
He’s trying, he’s making runs, and he’s hungry to score. Mistimed movement is often a symptom of a striker desperate to get it right—not one who has given up.

Almeyda’s support is exactly the kind of leadership players need during rough patches. And if Sevilla fans truly want their striker to turn things around, the energy must shift from hostility to encouragement.

Football careers rise and fall on confidence.
With patience and proper backing, Akor Adams could still explode into form—and when that moment comes, the same fans who doubted him may be the ones chanting his name the loudest.
