Carlos Baleba Eyes Ballon d’Or Glory, Inspired by Rodri’s Historic Win

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba has boldly declared his ambition to one day lift the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual honour. In an interview with SunSport, the Cameroonian starlet revealed that three prominent Premier League players — Declan Rice, Matheus Cunha, and Joelinton — have personally encouraged him, saying they believe he has what it takes to reach those heights.

“Declan Rice, Matheus Cunha, Joelinton, they have all told me I have got it in me [to win the Ballon d’Or],” Baleba said with conviction.

At just 20, Baleba’s dream may sound lofty to some, but he finds motivation in the footsteps of Rodri, the Manchester City and Spain midfield maestro who stunned the world by clinching the 2024 Ballon d’Or, edging out attacking talents like Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham.

“I want to win the Ballon d’Or like Rodri,” Baleba said.
“His success with Spain at the Euros and Manchester City winning the Premier League has opened the door for midfielders like us to believe we can win the Ballon d’Or someday.”

A Midfielder’s Moment

Rodri’s triumph shifted the narrative of Ballon d’Or contention. Traditionally dominated by goal scorers, the award’s recent tilt toward midfield mastery has given hope to players like Baleba — who thrive on intelligence, positioning, and build-up play, rather than flashy stats.

Though Baleba’s 2024/25 season with Brighton hasn’t placed him on the current Ballon d’Or radar, his long-term ambition speaks volumes. The former Lille star, who joined the Seagulls in 2023, has been steadily growing under the Premier League spotlight. His physicality, vision, and composure on the ball hint at a future where his name could be among the elite.

OPINION: Belief Is the First Step Toward Greatness

In a sport increasingly dominated by instant gratification and viral moments, Baleba’s determination is refreshing. While some may scoff at his dream, it’s often the players with unshakable belief who go the farthest. After all, who believed Luka Modrić could win the Ballon d’Or until he did in 2018?

Rodri’s win sent a clear message — football is evolving. It’s no longer just about goals and assists; it’s about influence, leadership, and consistency. If Baleba can continue to develop, contribute meaningfully to club and country, and lead Brighton to greater heights, who's to say this dream won't become a reality?

Let’s not write him off. Today’s underdog could be tomorrow’s headline.
