AfroBasket 2025: D’Tigers Open Campaign with Confident Win Over Madagascar

AfroBasket 2025: D’Tigers Open Campaign with Confident Win Over Madagascar

Nigeria’s D’Tigers kicked off their 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket journey on a bright note, securing a commanding 77-59 victory over Madagascar in their Group B opener.

The team started strong, outscoring Madagascar 18-14 in the first quarter. The island nation rallied in the second quarter, edging Nigeria 23-20 to close the gap. But D’Tigers went into halftime with a narrow 38-37 lead.

The third quarter proved decisive—Nigeria tightened their defence, found their rhythm in attack, and stretched the gap to 55-46. By the final buzzer, they had sealed a comfortable 18-point win.

Next, D’Tigers will lock horns with Tunisia in what promises to be a tougher Group B test.

Opinion:
While the scoreboard flatters Nigeria’s dominance, this was a game of two halves. Early on, Madagascar’s fightback exposed defensive lapses and a tendency to switch off after a strong start—an area coach [insert coach name if available] must address before facing higher-ranked sides like Tunisia.

That said, there’s plenty to be optimistic about. The team showed composure when pressured, improved their ball movement as the game wore on, and crucially, found a higher gear in the second half.

If D’Tigers can blend their natural athleticism with sharper execution and sustained intensity, they could be more than just participants at AfroBasket 2025—they could be genuine contenders.
