“My Grammy Prophecy Came True Through Burna Boy” – 9ice Reflects on His Famous Lyrics

“My Grammy Prophecy Came True Through Burna Boy” – 9ice Reflects on His Famous Lyrics

Veteran Nigerian singer 9ice has revisited one of the most iconic lines in Nigerian music history, asserting that his 2008 "Grammy prophecy" has indeed come to pass — through Burna Boy’s historic Grammy win.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show, 9ice addressed critics who have long mocked him for the bold declaration in his hit track Street Credibility featuring 2Face, where he famously sang: “Don’t doubt me, I go bring home Grammy.”

“I was talking about Grammy and I wasn’t given, Burna got it. We never get am?” 9ice said.
“At the time I was talking about it, it wasn’t even attainable for Afropop artists at all.”

He emphasized that music is spiritual and that artists often speak things into existence through their lyrics — a notion he believes applied to his case.

🏆 The Fulfillment: Burna Boy’s Victory

In 2021, Burna Boy became the first Nigerian solo artist to win a Grammy for Best Global Music Album with Twice As Tall at the 63rd Grammy Awards. While the win was Burna’s, 9ice believes it validates a collective dream for Nigerian artists and his own lyrical ambition.

“When artists sing, they can be passing messages… that’s why it’s important for artists to be very careful of their lyrics,” he added.

💬 Opinion – A Prophecy Bigger Than One Man

Whether you agree with 9ice or not, his statement reminds us that some lyrics transcend time and individual achievement. In many ways, 9ice’s Grammy dream became a symbol of Nigerian musical ambition long before the global stage began to truly recognize Afropop.

His acceptance that Burna Boy’s win is a win for all reflects a mature and spiritual perspective — that dreams planted in one generation may blossom in another.
