Chimamanda Adichie Backs Peter Obi, Praises His Humility and Genuine Leadership Qualities

Chimamanda Adichie Backs Peter Obi, Praises His Humility and Genuine Leadership Qualities

Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has reaffirmed her unwavering support for Peter Obi, the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, citing his humility, consistency, and genuine desire to serve Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Adichie distinguished Obi from typical Nigerian politicians, stressing that his presidential ambition is rooted not in ego or self-interest but in “a deep commitment to the country.”

“He doesn’t need to be president; he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. That is a very important distinction,” she said.

Adichie emphasized that Obi’s values have remained unchanged for over 15 years, describing him as “genuine, consistent, and curious” — leadership qualities she believes are essential for Nigeria’s progress. She lauded his accountability, stating that Obi sees leadership as a duty to the people, not an opportunity to demand praise or power.

“Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job… He’s accountable to the people. He doesn’t think he should lord it over anyone.”

When asked about the possibility of Obi not contesting in 2027, Adichie declined to comment, choosing instead to focus on her belief in his vision and values.

🗳️ A Voice for Change

Adichie was one of Peter Obi’s most prominent supporters during the 2023 elections, backing him through interviews, public appearances, and a viral campaign video. She also attended the presidential election tribunal in Abuja, where Obi challenged the election results that declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president.

In the aftermath, Adichie addressed a powerful open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, calling out the INEC and questioning the credibility of the election.

“My endorsement of Obi is rooted in my love for this country,” she said. “With the right leadership, Nigeria can move in a better direction.”

✍️ Why This Matters

Chimamanda’s endorsement resonates with many Nigerians, particularly the youth, who view Peter Obi as a symbol of a new political order — one centered on integrity, humility, and performance, rather than patronage and power.

As 2027 approaches, Obi’s political future remains uncertain, but support from influential voices like Adichie continues to fuel hope for transformational leadership in Nigeria.
