Manchester United Make Move for Carlos Baleba, But Brighton Slap €100m Tag on Midfield Star

Manchester United Make Move for Carlos Baleba, But Brighton Slap €100m Tag on Midfield Star

Manchester United have taken the first step toward a potential summer swoop for Carlos Baleba, with the club reportedly making contact with the Brighton midfielder’s camp this week, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

United’s inquiry is part of their broader midfield reinforcement strategy, especially as they edge closer to completing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško. However, landing Baleba won’t be straightforward — or cheap.

Romano revealed on his X (formerly Twitter) account:

“Manchester United approached Carlos Baleba’s camp this week to be informed on player’s situation. Brighton plan to keep Baleba at the club as price tag would be very high, seen as difficult deal.”

Brighton’s Stance: Hands Off Unless the Price Is Right

Brighton have reportedly set a towering €100 million price tag on the 20-year-old Cameroonian, who has quickly grown into one of their most promising assets. The Seagulls are not keen on losing him this summer and hope the valuation will deter potential suitors.

United’s Midfield Mission

With the expected arrival of Šeško to bolster their attack, Manchester United’s next priority is midfield — a position that has lacked consistency and dynamism since last season. Baleba, known for his energy, pressing, and ball-carrying ability, fits the profile of the kind of player Erik ten Hag is looking for.

However, €100 million is a steep ask, especially given United’s current financial flexibility and ongoing interest in other areas of the squad. It remains to be seen whether this early approach is a sign of serious intent or simply part of broader scouting.

Opinion: A Good Fit, But at What Cost?

Carlos Baleba would be a smart addition for Manchester United — young, energetic, and Premier League-proven. But Brighton's hardball approach is a reminder of how the club has become a master at selling high. With players like Moisés Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister gone, the Seagulls are determined not to lose another midfield star cheaply.

If United are serious about Baleba, they might need to offload players — or shift targets altogether. But one thing is clear: Ten Hag wants midfield reinforcement, and this summer could still hold a few twists in the transfer market.
