Calvin Bassey Delighted After Scoring First Super Eagles Goal
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey could not hide his excitement after netting his first-ever goal for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 1-1 draw against South Africa on Tuesday night.
Bassey rose highest to nod home Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s pinpoint cross on the stroke of half-time at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, canceling out an earlier own goal by captain William Troost-Ekong.
The 25-year-old, who has now made 32 appearances for Nigeria, marked the proud moment with an emotional post on social media.
“Honoured to wear this shirt and score my first goal. We didn’t win but we keep believing, if anyone can do it, it is God,” Bassey wrote.
Despite the result denting Nigeria’s hopes of automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bassey expressed confidence that the team will continue fighting.
Opinion: A Moment of Joy in a Cloud of Uncertainty
Bassey’s goal was more than just a personal milestone—it was a glimpse of hope in what has been a frustrating qualifying campaign for the Super Eagles. For a defender who has often been praised for his grit and work rate, opening his account in national colors is a fitting reward.
Yet, beyond the celebrations, Nigeria’s bigger picture remains cloudy. A six-point gap behind group leaders South Africa leaves the team’s World Cup dream hanging by a thread. Still, Bassey’s words echo what many fans desperately want to hear: belief.
Football is as much about moments of inspiration as it is about results. If Bassey’s first goal can spark renewed confidence in the squad, perhaps the Super Eagles can still script an unlikely comeback. After all, history has shown that Nigerian football thrives on resilience and drama.
For now, fans will take pride in seeing one of their own achieve a milestone, even as they continue to hope for brighter days ahead.
