Thierry Henry Defends Kylian Mbappé, Says Real Madrid Star Faces Unfair Scrutiny

Thierry Henry Defends Kylian Mbappé, Says Real Madrid Star Faces Unfair Scrutiny

Thierry Henry has come to the defence of Kylian Mbappé, insisting that the Real Madrid C.F. star is often judged too harshly despite his impressive achievements.

Speaking in comments reported by GOAL, Henry argued that critics tend to focus more on what Mbappé has not achieved rather than acknowledging his remarkable accomplishments.

“Sometimes Mbappé gets judged on what he is not doing or what he hasn’t done yet,” Henry said.

“And people kind of brush over what he has done, which I’m like, ‘OK, I get it, I’m not saying he gets a pass, but can we be fair sometimes?’”

Henry pointed out that Mbappé has carried enormous expectations since breaking into professional football as a teenager, yet has consistently delivered at the highest level.

“There’s been so much expectation on this guy since he was 16, and he has almost always delivered. Look at the stats, if you look at the trophies, if you look at the numbers, they aren’t bad,” he added.

The former Arsenal F.C. striker also highlighted Mbappé’s achievements on the international stage with France national football team.

“This guy has played in two World Cups and reached two finals. I mean, if he goes to a third one, it’s not even the history of France here; you are talking about the history of the World Cup.”

Mbappé’s numbers underline his impact in the game. The forward has scored 372 goals in 475 club appearances across spells with AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain F.C., and Real Madrid. Internationally, he has recorded 55 goals in 94 appearances for France.

Opinion: The Burden of Great Expectations

Mbappé’s career highlights a common reality for football’s brightest stars—the higher the talent, the higher the expectations.

Since his breakthrough at Monaco, Mbappé has been viewed as one of the players destined to dominate world football. As a result, even extraordinary achievements sometimes feel “normal” to fans and analysts.

Henry’s comments remind observers that Mbappé’s record already places him among the elite of his generation. Few players reach two World Cup finals before the age of 25, and even fewer maintain such consistent scoring numbers at club level.

Rather than constantly measuring Mbappé against future possibilities, it may be time to appreciate what he has already accomplished—a career that, even now, is shaping up to be historically significant. ⚽
