Benin Traditional Council Denies Approval for Peller’s Visit to Oba’s Palace

Benin Traditional Council Denies Approval for Peller’s Visit to Oba’s Palace

The Benin Traditional Council has clarified that popular streamer Peller was not granted approval to visit the Palace of the Oba of Benin, countering claims made by the content creator and his management.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, explained that while a request letter may have been submitted and acknowledged, such action does not equate to official permission.

“The submission and acknowledgement of a request letter does not constitute approval,” Irabor stated, stressing that formal authorisation is required before any visit to the palace can be deemed legitimate.

The council described the visit as “unauthorised” and raised concerns about misinformation surrounding the incident. It also questioned whether Peller and his team obtained any written approval or disclosed the full intent of their visit, including any interaction with palace members.

Irabor further revealed that the matter is currently undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings, adding that Peller has been invited to the palace for further clarification.

Reaffirming its stance, the council emphasised its commitment to preserving the customs, traditions, and sanctity of the Benin Royal Palace, noting that such protocols must be respected at all times.

Opinion: Respecting Tradition in the Age of Content Creation

This incident highlights a growing tension between modern digital culture and longstanding traditional institutions.

Content creators like Peller thrive on access, visibility, and spontaneity—but spaces like the Benin Royal Palace operate on strict protocols rooted in history and cultural significance. When these two worlds collide, misunderstandings are almost inevitable.

However, this situation also points to a broader issue: the need for greater awareness and respect for cultural institutions. Not every space is content-friendly, and not every moment is meant for public consumption.

At the same time, traditional bodies may need to communicate their rules more clearly in an era where public figures operate at a fast pace and often across different cultural boundaries.

Ultimately, the lesson is mutual—creators must respect tradition, and institutions must adapt their communication. Without that balance, similar controversies are likely to continue.
