Rasmus Højlund Finds “Joy Again” at Napoli, Reflects on Struggles at Manchester United

Napoli striker Rasmus Højlund has admitted he struggled during his time at Manchester United, while revealing he has rediscovered his confidence and happiness in Italy.

Speaking to TV2, the Denmark international acknowledged that his performances at Old Trafford fell short of expectations, leading to criticism and doubts about his form.

“If we look at the recent periods at Manchester United, I didn’t perform well. I’m aware of that, but now many things have changed,” Højlund said.

The 23-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Atalanta in 2023, was sent on loan to Napoli last year after failing to make a consistent impact in the Premier League.

Reflecting on the criticism he faced, Højlund noted that some had even written him off in Denmark, but he remained determined to turn things around.

“At Napoli, I feel joy again,” he added, suggesting that the change of environment has played a key role in his resurgence.

Opinion: A Change of Scenery—or a Lesson for Manchester United?

Rasmus Højlund’s comments underline a common reality in modern football—sometimes, talent isn’t the problem, but the environment is.

Manchester United has become a difficult place for young players to thrive in recent years, with intense scrutiny, inconsistent team structure, and high expectations often affecting performance. Højlund’s struggles may say as much about the club’s situation as they do about the player himself.

At Napoli, however, the Dane appears to have found a system and atmosphere that suits him better. Confidence, especially for strikers, is everything—and once lost, it can be difficult to regain without the right support.

His story also serves as a reminder that careers are rarely linear. Being written off at one club does not define a player’s future, and the right move at the right time can completely change the narrative.

For Manchester United, it raises questions about player development and recruitment decisions. For Højlund, it looks like a fresh start—and perhaps the beginning of a redemption story.
