Maduka Okoye Explains AFCON Absence, Prioritised Club Form Over Tournament Call-Up

Maduka Okoye has opened up on his decision to decline an invitation to represent the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco.

The goalkeeper, who was notably absent from the squad, revealed that his choice was influenced by the need to rebuild his fitness and form after a period away from competitive football.

Okoye had missed the start of the 2025–26 season due to a suspension linked to an alleged betting scandal, which disrupted his momentum at club level.

Speaking to Kicker, the former Watford shot-stopper explained that he opted to stay back with Udinese to regain sharpness and repay the club for their support during his difficult period.

“Since I was not Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, I believed it was better to remain at Udinese, work on my form, and also show appreciation to the club,” he said.

Okoye is now expected to return to action for Nigeria in their upcoming international friendly against Iran in Antalya, Turkey.
