Lagos State Warns Sarah Martins Against Cooking on Public Roads

Lagos State Warns Sarah Martins Against Cooking on Public Roads

The Lagos State Government has issued a formal warning to Nollywood actress Sarah Martins over her recent street cooking and food distribution activities, stating that such acts violate environmental and public order regulations.

The warning came from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X handle on Saturday evening. Wahab acknowledged the charitable intent behind Martins’ actions but stressed that cooking or trading on public roads, walkways, or medians poses safety, sanitation, and traffic hazards.

“My attention has been drawn to your recent activity of cooking and distributing food on the streets of Lagos. While we appreciate the spirit of charity, carrying out such activities on public roads is not permitted under Lagos environmental and public order regulations,” Wahab said. He further reminded Martins that she had previously been cautioned for a similar activity last year but was allowed to continue due to the philanthropic nature of her work.

The commissioner advised that charitable initiatives should be conducted through approved locations and proper channels to ensure assistance is provided safely and lawfully. “If you wish to continue your charitable outreach, it should be done through proper channels and in approved locations so that your efforts can support vulnerable people without violating existing laws,” he added.

Opinion: Charity Must Respect the Law

While Martins’ generosity is commendable, her actions highlight a delicate balance between philanthropy and public safety. Acts of kindness should not unintentionally create hazards for the community or violate regulations designed to protect residents.

Street feeding initiatives are noble, especially for vulnerable children and residents, but they must be organized within legal and safe frameworks. By partnering with designated community centers, charity kitchens, or approved public facilities, celebrities like Martins can continue to make a meaningful impact without risking legal issues or public safety concerns.

Charity, after all, works best when it uplifts without compromising the environment or the well-being of the wider public.
