Salah Reveals Why He Rejected Mourinho’s Loan Plans at Chelsea and Chose to Leave England

lsea, revealing why he turned down former manager Jose Mourinho’s plans for him to remain in England on loan.

Speaking in an interview with StanSport, the Liverpool forward reflected on his relationship with Mourinho, describing it as positive despite his decision to leave Stamford Bridge early in his career.

Salah explained that Mourinho had wanted him either to stay at Chelsea or move on loan within the United Kingdom before returning to the club. However, the Egyptian winger made it clear he wanted a different path.

“I remember I had a conversation with Jose… he told me, ‘I want you to stay or just go somewhere on loan, then come back in the UK because I want you.’ I said no. I want to see myself away now,” Salah said.

He added that he was feeling pressure at the time and preferred a fresh start abroad. “I want to go to Italy. I want to play there, and I don’t want to go on loan and come back to a club,” he explained.

Salah made his Premier League debut under Mourinho in 2014 but struggled for regular playing time before leaving Chelsea for loan spells at Fiorentina and later AS Roma, where he rebuilt his career before becoming one of the world’s top forwards.

Opinion: The Decision That Changed Everything

Looking back, Salah’s decision wasn’t just about leaving Chelsea—it was about choosing control over convenience.

At the time, staying under Mourinho’s system or accepting another loan in England might have felt like the safer route. But Mohamed Salah chose uncertainty instead, stepping into Serie A with no guarantee of success.

That decision now reads as one of modern football’s defining turning points. His time at Fiorentina and especially AS Roma transformed him from a struggling Premier League prospect into a world-class attacker.

For Mourinho, the story is more complex. His preference for a structured loan path reflects a managerial style focused on gradual development and control. But footballers are not always patient with slow timelines—especially those who feel they need a reset.

What makes this story interesting is not disagreement, but timing. Both perspectives were valid—but Salah’s gamble ultimately reshaped his entire career trajectory.

It’s a reminder that in football, sometimes the most important decision a player makes isn’t where they succeed—but where they choose to start over.
