Malawi Boost Squad with Overseas Stars Ahead of Falconets Showdown
Head coach Maggie Chombo has strengthened Malawi’s U-20 women’s national team with the inclusion of foreign-based players Faith Chinzimu and Rose Kabzere ahead of their decisive clash against Nigeria’s Falconets.
The second-leg fixture of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final qualifying round is set to take place at the Bingu National Stadium on Saturday.
Malawi head into the encounter with a difficult task, having lost the first leg 2–0 to Nigeria women's national under-20 football team at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne last weekend.
Midfielder Chinzimu, who plays for Swedish side BK Häcken FF, brings valuable experience after being part of the team that won the 2025/26 Women’s Europa League. Meanwhile, Kabzere currently features for French club Montpellier HSC.
Malawi are aiming to overturn the deficit and secure a historic qualification for their first-ever U-20 Women’s World Cup appearance.
Opinion: A Bold Push, But Nigeria Hold the Advantage
This is shaping up to be more than just a football match—it’s a test of ambition versus experience.
For Malawi, the inclusion of Faith Chinzimu and Rose Kabzere signals intent. Bringing in players exposed to European football adds quality, composure, and tactical awareness—exactly what is needed when chasing a two-goal deficit.
But the reality remains tough.
Nigeria women's national under-20 football team are historically one of Africa’s strongest sides at this level. Their 2–0 advantage is not just a scoreline—it reflects structure, experience, and an ability to manage big games.
Malawi’s hope lies in early momentum. A quick goal could shift pressure onto Nigeria and energize the home crowd. Without that, the task becomes increasingly difficult as the game progresses.
Still, this is football—momentum can change quickly.
Even if Malawi fall short, their push for a first-ever World Cup appearance shows growth and ambition. But if they are to make history, it will require not just talent—but a near-perfect performance on the day.
