FIFA Explains VAR Failure After Controversial Switzerland Penalty Against Qatar

FIFA has confirmed that a technical issue affected the semi-automated offside technology during Switzerland’s controversial opening goal against Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The incident occurred in the first half when Switzerland were awarded a penalty after Remo Freuler went down following a collision with Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada. Breel Embolo stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Switzerland the lead.

However, the decision immediately sparked debate, with many viewers questioning whether Freuler appeared to be in an offside position before the penalty incident. The usual VAR offside animation was not shown during the review, leading to further confusion among fans.

FIFA has now revealed that the technology responsible for producing the semi-automated offside graphic experienced a brief outage before the penalty was awarded.

In an official statement, FIFA explained: “During the Qatar vs. Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. The issue was quickly resolved.”

The football body insisted that the VAR process itself was not affected and that officials followed the normal review procedure. FIFA added that the lines used by VAR showed Freuler was not in an offside position in the moments leading up to the penalty decision.

While FIFA’s explanation clears up the technical issue, the controversy highlights a growing concern in modern football — the balance between technology and trust. VAR was introduced to remove major mistakes from the game, but when key visuals fail to appear during a disputed moment, doubts naturally return.

For many supporters, the biggest issue is not only whether the correct decision was made, but whether fans could clearly see and understand why it was made. Transparency has become just as important as accuracy in football’s technology era.

The Switzerland penalty may have been officially justified, but the missing offside animation has once again shown that even the most advanced systems in football must be reliable, visible, and trusted by everyone watching.
