Toyin Adewale Reveals She Initially Thought Davido Was a Scammer Before Mayorkun’s Big Break

Toyin Adewale Reveals She Initially Thought Davido Was a Scammer Before Mayorkun’s Big Break

Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has revealed that she initially suspected something was wrong when Afrobeats star Davido first reached out to her son, Mayorkun, before helping launch his music career.

Speaking during an appearance on the Talk to B podcast, Adewale recalled how she and her son first reacted when Davido sent Mayorkun a message on social media after a cover song by the singer went viral.

According to the actress, they initially believed the message might have come from a scammer because they were not expecting contact from a major music star.

“After the cover he did went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but we thought it was a scammer,” she said.

Adewale explained that Davido later called Mayorkun directly and arranged a meeting, which became the turning point in the young singer’s career.

She recalled how excited Mayorkun was when the call came in, adding that Davido asked for his measurements while he was away on a trip and later gifted him clothes, money, and other items when they met.

The actress admitted that she was initially cautious because she did not know Davido personally at the time.

“I was scared at the time because I didn’t know who Davido was,” she said.

She revealed that Mayorkun later recorded his breakout hit “Eleko” with Davido and eventually became part of his team. Adewale added that when she visited where they stayed, she found Davido to be respectful and welcoming.

Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, rose to fame after Davido signed him to his record label, helping him become one of Nigeria’s recognised Afrobeats artistes.

Adewale’s story highlights the unexpected beginnings behind many music success stories — where a single message, opportunity, and the right support can completely change an artiste’s journey.
