Chelsea Defender Mamadou Sarr Names Messi, Mane and Pogba as His World Cup Heroes

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr has revealed the three football stars he considers his biggest World Cup heroes during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 20-year-old centre-back, who is currently part of Senegal’s squad at the tournament, named Argentina captain Lionel Messi, Senegal legend Sadio Mane, and France midfielder Paul Pogba as players who have inspired him.

Sarr, who has not yet featured for the Teranga Lions after remaining an unused substitute in their matches against Senegal’s opponents, is hoping to get an opportunity in their final Group I fixture on Friday.

Speaking about his football inspirations, the young defender told Chelsea’s official website:

“There is Lionel Messi, Sadio Mane, and Paul Pogba — with Pogba he is a leader. He has the right mentality in the group to lead.”

The Chelsea youngster’s admiration for the trio highlights the influence of both individual brilliance and leadership qualities in modern football.

Opinion: Sarr’s choices show that football heroes are not only remembered for goals and trophies but also for their character and influence. Messi represents consistency and greatness, Mane represents determination and pride for African football, while Pogba’s leadership qualities remain a major part of his legacy.

For a young player like Sarr, learning from different qualities of top players could be valuable as he continues developing his own career on the international stage.
