Wike Expresses Disappointment Over Nigeria’s World Cup Absence, Urges Super Eagles to Learn Lessons

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the setback as painful for millions of football-loving Nigerians.

Wike, while speaking in Abuja, urged former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo to pass the concerns and emotions of Nigerians to the national team players and technical crew.

According to the FCT Minister, football remains one of the biggest unifying forces in Nigeria, and the country’s absence from the global tournament has affected supporters who expected the Super Eagles to secure a place among the world’s best teams.

He noted that Nigerians had high expectations from the team and hoped the experience would serve as a lesson for future international competitions.

Wike, however, expressed optimism that the Super Eagles can recover, rebuild, and return stronger to compete at the highest level of international football.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup means the country has now missed two consecutive editions of football’s biggest tournament, having also failed to make it to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Opinion: Nigeria’s World Cup absence is more than just a football disappointment; it reflects the need for deeper reforms in the country’s football structure. The Super Eagles still possess talented players, but consistent planning, strong leadership, and better preparation are needed to restore confidence among supporters.

For a nation where football brings people together regardless of differences, returning to the world stage should remain a major priority for administrators and stakeholders.
