Ian Wright Questions Argentina’s World Cup Defence After Cape Verde Scare
Former Ian Wright believes reigning champions Argentina are vulnerable despite reaching the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Wright made the assessment after Argentina survived a stern test to defeat Cape Verde 3-2 in their Round of 32 clash.
The holders took the lead through Lionel Messi in Miami before Deroy Duarte equalised to force the contest into extra time.
Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina's advantage, but Sidny Cabral struck back with an impressive finish to level the score once more.
Argentina eventually found the decisive goal in the 111th minute to book their place in the last 16.
Reacting on ITV, Wright argued that the performance exposed weaknesses that stronger opponents could exploit.
“They are there to be beaten. If you can give the same kind of endeavour we saw Cape Verde give, but you have more quality in the final third, then Argentina are there to be beaten.
“I think in the wide areas they are very weak. You can get at them in those areas.”
Argentina will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 showdown with Egypt as they continue their quest to retain the World Cup.
Opinion
Wright's assessment is based on what unfolded against Cape Verde rather than Argentina's reputation. The defending champions showed resilience to win, but conceding twice and struggling to control wide areas suggests there are vulnerabilities. Whether those weaknesses prove decisive will depend on the quality of the opposition. Against teams with greater attacking efficiency than Cape Verde, Argentina may need a more complete performance to keep their title defence alive.
