World Cup 2026: Paraguay Boss Alfaro Rejects Deschamps Apology Demand After Bench Insult Claims

World Cup 2026: Paraguay Boss Alfaro Rejects Deschamps Apology Demand After Bench Insult Claims

Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro has insisted he has no reason to apologise to France manager Didier Deschamps following allegations that insulting remarks were directed at the French coach from the Paraguay bench during their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash.

Deschamps expressed his frustration after the match, claiming members of the Paraguay technical area hurled insults at him during the encounter.

"I could have done without the insults on the bench. Especially some of them," Deschamps said, according to Football 365.

However, Alfaro firmly denied any knowledge of such behaviour, saying he neither heard any offensive comments nor would he tolerate them if they had occurred.

"Football isn't war. I'm not going to apologise for something that, to my knowledge, didn't happen.

"I am completely opposed to this kind of behaviour. If I had heard such remarks, I would have reacted immediately myself. It's unacceptable. I am totally against it."

The Paraguayan coach also revealed that he personally sought out Deschamps after the final whistle to wish him success for the remainder of the tournament.

"The first thing I did after the final whistle was to go and find Didier Deschamps. I wished him all the best in reaching the final and becoming world champion. I had already told him before the match: he has a fantastic team."

The Round of 16 encounter was also marked by controversy over the performance of referee Ilgiz Tantashev. France received three yellow cards during the match, while Paraguay escaped without a booking despite several robust challenges, including incidents involving Gustavo Velázquez and Matías Galarza on France captain Kylian Mbappé and defender Jules Koundé.

Deschamps, who has guided France to four consecutive World Cup quarter-finals, remains on course to pursue a third world title for Les Bleus after their triumphs in 1998 and 2018.

Opinion

Alfaro's refusal to apologise is understandable if he genuinely did not witness or hear the alleged remarks. An apology generally implies accepting responsibility, and it would be unreasonable to admit fault without evidence. At the same time, Deschamps' comments should not be dismissed outright, as managers are often keenly aware of interactions from the opposing technical area during high-pressure matches.

If any abusive language was used, it should be addressed through the appropriate disciplinary process rather than through public exchanges. The focus should remain on ensuring respect between coaching staffs while allowing any investigation to establish the facts.
