Xabi Alonso Confirms Robert Sanchez Injury After Chelsea’s Defeat to Tottenham
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that goalkeeper Robert Sánchez missed Saturday's pre-season clash against Tottenham Hotspur due to a minor injury sustained in training.
Sanchez was absent as Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at Sydney's Accor Stadium, prompting questions about the goalkeeper's fitness after the match.
Providing an update, Alonso reassured supporters that the injury is not considered serious but said the club will continue to monitor the Spaniard's recovery before making a decision on his return.
"Mike [Penders] is joining us in Hong Kong, and Robert has a minor injury, not a big thing, but not for today, and we will have to wait until, let's see, for the next week," Alonso said.
The Chelsea boss added that the medical team will assess Sanchez on a daily basis, stressing that there was no reason to take unnecessary risks during a pre-season fixture.
"We need to go assessing almost day by day, but there was no point in taking risks today."
The update comes as Chelsea continue preparations for the new campaign under Alonso, who is using the club's pre-season tour to evaluate his squad while integrating new faces and refining his tactical approach.
With young goalkeeper Mike Penders set to join the squad in Hong Kong, Chelsea are expected to have additional cover as Sanchez works toward full fitness.
Opinion: Pre-season injuries are always frustrating, but Chelsea will be encouraged that Sanchez's issue appears to be minor. Alonso's decision to prioritize player fitness over results is a sensible approach, especially with the Premier League season fast approaching and competition for places expected to be fierce.
