Funke Akindele Recounts How She Earned Her First ₦1 Million from “I Need to Know,” Shares Lessons from Her Humble Beginning

Funke Akindele Recounts How She Earned Her First ₦1 Million from “I Need to Know,” Shares Lessons from Her Humble Beginning

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about the early struggles that shaped her illustrious career, revealing how she earned her first ₦1 million in 1999 from her breakout role as “Bisi” in the hit educational TV series I Need to Know.

In a heartfelt video shared on her X (formerly Twitter) account, the actress reflected on her journey to fame, admitting that it was far from easy.

“I started my career in 1996, playing waka pass roles. By 1997, I was going for auditions and getting a lot of ‘no’s,’” Akindele recalled.
“Then I got one big ‘yes’ with I Need to Know, and that was how I earned my first ₦1 million.”

The Battle on Buka Street producer also revealed what she did with the money — and how her mother guided her first steps into financial responsibility.

“When I got the ₦1 million, the first person I told was my mom. She advised me to pay my tithe first before touching the money,” she said.
“After that, I went to Yaba because I didn’t have shoes. I changed my wardrobe, shoes, bags, everything. The girl that had no shoes yesterday has today.”

💬 Opinion: A Million Naira Story That’s Worth More Than Money

Funke Akindele’s revelation is more than a trip down memory lane — it’s a masterclass in resilience and gratitude. In a world where many want overnight fame, her story reminds us that every “yes” is built on countless “no’s.”

From waka pass roles to becoming one of Nigeria’s most successful actresses, producers, and box office queens, Akindele’s rise is proof that consistency and humility never go out of style.

Her mother’s advice about paying tithe also highlights a deeper value often lost in today’s hustle culture — the importance of acknowledging God and staying grounded, no matter how much success comes your way.

Beyond the million naira, the real takeaway from Funke’s story is this: dreams take time, effort, and faith. Every struggling actor, entrepreneur, or creator can draw inspiration from her journey — because the same “girl who had no shoes yesterday” now walks confidently in success built from sweat, sacrifice, and grace.
