Galatasaray Shift Focus From Lookman to Mohamed Salah in Ambitious Transfer Plan
Galatasaray are reportedly reconsidering their transfer strategy as they weigh a bold move for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, potentially shelving interest in Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman.
The update was provided by Galatasaray commentator Uğur Karakullukçu, who revealed that the Turkish champions are now leaning toward a more ambitious pursuit of the Egyptian international.
Both Salah and Lookman have been linked with moves to Istanbul in recent months. While Lookman remained at Atalanta after failing to secure a transfer last summer and has only recently been reintegrated into the squad, Salah’s situation at Liverpool has sparked fresh speculation following reported internal issues and his absence from the Reds’ squad that defeated Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Karakullukçu disclosed that Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek is keen on maximizing value rather than committing a large fee to Lookman.
“Dursun Özbek said, ‘Instead of paying Lookman €45 million, and considering his salary will be around €10 million plus taxes, let’s go for Mohamed Salah. If we can afford his transfer fee, let’s get Salah,’” Karakullukçu stated.
“There is an idea to go for Salah instead of Lookman. The goal is to get him from Liverpool for free.”
Opinion: Dream Signing or Calculated Gamble?
From a branding and footballing perspective, Mohamed Salah would be a blockbuster signing for Galatasaray. His global profile, Champions League pedigree, and proven consistency make him an instant icon in any league outside the Premier League.
However, the plan to land Salah on a free transfer is where ambition meets reality. Even if Liverpool allow him to leave without a fee, Salah’s wages and signing bonuses would still demand a massive financial commitment.
On the other hand, Lookman represents a younger, more sustainable option—already adapted to European football and still entering his prime. While he may not have Salah’s superstar aura, he offers long-term value and resale potential.
Galatasaray’s dilemma is clear:
Do they chase a dream that could redefine the club’s global image, or invest in a player who fits the future?
Either way, this signals Galatasaray’s intent to compete beyond domestic dominance—and that alone will keep fans watching closely as the transfer window approaches.
