CAF Increases AFCON 2025 Prize Money as Winners Set to Earn $10m
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), raising the stakes ahead of the tournament’s kickoff in Morocco.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, made the announcement on Saturday while addressing the media in Rabat, confirming that the champions of AFCON 2025 will receive a whopping $10 million. This marks a notable rise from the $7 million awarded to champions Côte d’Ivoire at the last edition of the tournament.
TalkTalk Nigeria recalls that Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who finished as runners-up at AFCON 2023, received $4 million, while other teams also benefited from improved financial rewards as CAF continued its push to make African football more competitive and commercially attractive.
The 2025 AFCON finals will officially kick off on Sunday, with host nation Morocco facing Comoros in the opening match, setting the tone for what promises to be a thrilling tournament.
Opinion: A Strong Statement for African Football
This increase in prize money sends a powerful message about CAF’s ambition to elevate African football to a global standard. Beyond the glamour and bragging rights, financial incentives play a crucial role in motivating teams, improving football development back home, and justifying the sacrifices players make when representing their countries.
For many African federations, AFCON prize money directly impacts grassroots football, player welfare, and infrastructure development. A $10 million reward is not just a win for the champions—it is a potential boost for football ecosystems across the continent.
As AFCON 2025 gets underway, the increased prize purse adds extra fire to the competition. With pride, passion, and now bigger financial rewards on the line, fans can expect fierce battles and unforgettable moments as Africa’s best nations chase continental glory.
