AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Seek Improved Bonus Package as Prize Money Rises

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Seek Improved Bonus Package as Prize Money Rises

The Super Eagles have reportedly demanded an improved bonus package from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ahead of their campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, TalkTalk Nigeria reports.

According to SCORENigeria, the NFF has proposed a performance-based bonus structure that increases as the team progresses in the tournament. However, the players are said to be pushing for a higher payout, arguing that their rewards should reflect the recent increase in prize money announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF confirmed last weekend that the winners of AFCON 2025 will receive a record $10 million, a significant jump from the $7 million earned by defending champions Côte d’Ivoire after lifting the trophy on home soil in 2023. Nigeria, who finished as runners-up in that edition, went home with $4 million.

Opinion: A Fair Demand or a Risky Distraction?

The players’ stance raises a familiar but important conversation in Nigerian football. On one hand, their argument is understandable. With CAF increasing prize money, players naturally expect better compensation, especially given the physical demands, pressure, and national expectations that come with representing Nigeria on the biggest African stage.

On the other hand, timing is crucial. Bonus disputes have historically been a distraction for the Super Eagles at major tournaments, sometimes overshadowing preparation and focus. Fans will hope that negotiations are handled swiftly and quietly, allowing the team to concentrate fully on football.

Ultimately, performance remains the strongest bargaining chip. A united, motivated Super Eagles side has the talent to go all the way in Morocco. If they do, the rewards—financial and otherwise—will justify the ambition. But for now, balance is key: fair compensation from the NFF, and total commitment from the players, with the bigger picture of national pride firmly in view.
