KWAM 1 Seeks Awujale Throne: Ruling House Sets Genealogy Verification

KWAM 1 Seeks Awujale Throne: Ruling House Sets Genealogy Verification

Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, has officially expressed interest in ascending the Awujale throne of Ijebuland, Ogun State. In a letter dated December 3, 2025, addressed to the chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Agunsebi Quarters, Ijebu-Ode, KWAM 1 described himself as a “bonafide son” of the ruling house, citing both Ijebu customary law and Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws in support of his claim.

However, the ruling house has emphasised that lineage verification is mandatory. In an interview with Punch, Chairman Abdulateef Owoyemi explained that KWAM 1, along with other aspirants, must complete the royal lineage data form, tracing their ancestry back seven generations, to confirm membership in the Fusengbuwa Ruling House. Only verified candidates will be allowed to proceed to the next stage of the selection process.

“We won’t shut anybody out of picking the next Awujale, but we must ensure that you are a legitimate member of Fusengbuwa. Every right comes with responsibilities,” Owoyemi said.

KWAM 1 has been granted a five-day extension to submit his documentation, with the window closing on December 10. The ruling house plans to select candidates by December 18, after which the kingmakers will deliberate and present their choice to the Ogun State governor for ratification. If all proceeds smoothly, a new Awujale is expected to emerge between the second and third week of January 2026.

Opinion: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Influence

KWAM 1’s interest in the Awujale throne highlights the delicate balance between tradition and modern influence in contemporary chieftaincy politics. His fame and societal influence may bring fresh energy to Ijebuland, but the ruling house’s insistence on strict genealogical proof underscores the importance of preserving cultural legitimacy.

This process sends a clear message: royal influence alone cannot override tradition. In a time when fame and wealth often intersect with leadership roles, Ijebuland’s approach preserves the integrity of the chieftaincy system, ensuring that the Awujale throne remains in the hands of rightful heirs.

KWAM 1’s journey, if successful, could serve as a powerful example of how modern figures can honor tradition while contributing their unique influence—a blend that may invigorate the monarchy while respecting centuries-old customs.
