Remo Stars Suffer Blow as Victor Mbaoma Misses CAF Champions League Opener
Remo Stars have been handed a setback ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg clash against US Zilimadjou of Comoros, with striker Victor Mbaoma ruled out due to injury.
Mbaoma, who picked up a rib injury during the NPFL opening day match against Rivers United on August 22, has not recovered in time to feature in Sunday’s fixture at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta.
The club confirmed his absence in a statement on Saturday:
“Further to sustaining a rib injury after our league opener against Rivers United on 22nd August, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews with Victor, he is ruled out of our CAFCL preliminary round. The striker has however started personal training.”
The 27-year-old has resumed light training and is expected to return to full fitness soon. The return leg against US Zilimadjou will take place in Comoros next week.
Opinion: A Test of Depth and Mentality for Remo Stars
Mbaoma’s absence is undoubtedly a huge blow for Daniel Ogunmodede’s side. His experience and sharpness in front of goal would have been vital in a continental game where margins are often slim.
However, this moment also presents a test of Remo Stars’ squad depth and mental toughness. Can the younger forwards step up to deliver on such a big stage? Continental football demands adaptability, and finding goals from unexpected sources could be the difference between early elimination and progress to the next round.
If the Sky Blue Stars can rally together and secure a first-leg advantage at home, Mbaoma’s eventual return might just be the boost they need to dream bigger in this year’s Champions League journey.
