AFCON 2025: Eric Chelle Admits Pressure as Super Eagles Target Quarter-Final Spot

AFCON 2025: Eric Chelle Admits Pressure as Super Eagles Target Quarter-Final Spot

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has openly declared Nigeria’s determination to defeat Mozambique and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The three-time African champions head into the Round of 16 clash in confident form, having recorded a 100 per cent record in the group stage with three wins from three matches. However, Chelle admits that this impressive run also brings pressure, as expectations around the team continue to rise.

Nigeria’s caution is shaped by history. The last time the Super Eagles won all their group games at the AFCON, in 2021, they suffered a shocking Round of 16 exit to Tunisia. Determined not to repeat that disappointment, Chelle insists his team is fully focused on the immediate task at hand.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the Malian tactician said:

“We want to win the next game. If God gives us the chance to go to the quarter-final, we will think about the quarter-final. But now we think about this game against Mozambique and for sure we want to win this game. Yes, we are under pressure.”

Opinion: Chelle’s honesty is refreshing and timely. At major tournaments like AFCON, momentum can be both a blessing and a burden. Nigeria’s perfect group-stage run has raised hopes among fans, but history has shown that knockout football often punishes complacency. Mozambique may not carry Nigeria’s pedigree, yet AFCON is famous for rewriting scripts when least expected.

What stands out is Chelle’s insistence on focus, humility, and urgency. Rather than looking ahead, the Super Eagles are treating the clash as a final in itself. If Nigeria can channel the pressure positively, maintain defensive discipline, and remain ruthless in attack, this team has every reason to believe that the quarter-finals — and possibly more — are within reach.

For now, all eyes remain on Monday, where Nigeria’s ambition, preparation, and mental strength will be put to the ultimate test.
