Super Falcons Set for 2028 Olympic Qualifiers Draw as Africa Prepares Road to Los Angeles

Super Falcons Set for 2028 Olympic Qualifiers Draw as Africa Prepares Road to Los Angeles

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the draw for the African qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament will take place on Wednesday at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The ceremony, which will be streamed live on CAF TV from 12 noon, will determine the qualification pathway for 35 national teams, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The qualification series will be played across five rounds, with only two African teams eventually earning tickets to represent the continent at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Nigeria will be aiming to return to the global stage after featuring at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris alongside Morocco women’s national football team, marking a strong presence for African football in the last edition of the tournament.

Opinion: A Tough Road Ahead, But Africa Is Closing the Gap

For the Super Falcons, this draw is more than just a procedural step—it is the beginning of a long and demanding journey.

African women’s football has grown significantly in recent years, but the qualification format shows just how competitive and limited the pathway remains. With 35 teams chasing only two Olympic spots, there is little room for error.

Nigeria, historically one of the strongest teams on the continent, will be expected to lead the charge. However, recent progress from nations like Morocco suggests that the gap between traditional powerhouses and emerging teams is narrowing.

The fact that Africa only gets two slots also raises familiar questions about representation at global tournaments. While performance must always be earned on the pitch, many would argue that the continent’s growing quality deserves greater recognition.

Still, for teams like the Super Falcons, the focus will be clear: navigate the rounds, handle the pressure, and secure a place at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Because in a format this unforgiving, history and reputation alone will not be enough—consistency will decide everything.
