Chelsea Eye Xabi Alonso as Leading Candidate for Managerial Role Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Xabi Alonso has reportedly emerged as the leading contender to become the next manager of Chelsea FC as the club intensifies its search for a new head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea have already made contact with Alonso, who is currently without a job after parting ways with Real Madrid CF.

The Blues are eager to finalize a managerial appointment quickly following the departure of Liam Rosenior, with the club hoping to establish stability before the global tournament begins.

While Alonso appears to be the preferred option, Chelsea are also considering several other respected coaches across Europe. Marco Silva, currently with Fulham FC, and outgoing Andoni Iraola of AFC Bournemouth remain on the shortlist.

Other names under consideration include Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace FC and former CR Flamengo coach Filipe Luis.

Chelsea had reportedly explored the possibility of hiring Filipe Luis in the past, before eventually moving in another direction.

Opinion: Xabi Alonso Could Be the Statement Chelsea Need

If Chelsea succeed in bringing in Xabi Alonso, it would signal more than just another managerial appointment — it would represent a major attempt to redefine the club’s football identity.

Alonso’s reputation has grown rapidly in recent years because of his calm leadership, tactical intelligence, and modern style of football. Even though his spell at Real Madrid CF ended earlier than expected, many still view him as one of Europe’s brightest coaching minds.

Chelsea’s biggest issue in recent seasons has not simply been inconsistency on the pitch, but the absence of a long-term football direction. The club has changed managers frequently, signed players in large numbers, and struggled to build a clear identity.

That is why Alonso feels like an attractive option. He carries authority as a former elite midfielder, understands pressure at the highest level, and could command instant respect inside the dressing room.

However, appointing him would still carry risk. Managing Chelsea is vastly different from working in a more patient environment. The expectations are relentless, and the margin for error is small.

Still, if Chelsea truly want a manager capable of building a modern, competitive project rather than merely surviving week-to-week pressure, Alonso may be the boldest and most ambitious choice available.
