Ronald Koeman Urges Barcelona to Sign Marcus Rashford Permanently After El Clasico Heroics
Former Ronald Koeman has strongly backed Marcus Rashford to remain at FC Barcelona permanently following the forward’s standout display in El Clasico.
Rashford, who is currently on loan from Manchester United FC, played a crucial role in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid CF on Sunday, opening the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the ninth minute.
Barcelona reportedly have the option to sign the England international permanently for €30 million this summer, although the club has yet to confirm whether they intend to activate the clause.
Reacting to Rashford’s recent performances, Koeman insisted Barcelona would regret allowing the player to return to Manchester United.
“If Barcelona allows him to return to Manchester United after this loan, I believe they will deeply regret it,” Koeman told Diario AS.
The Dutchman described the transfer fee as a bargain in the current market and praised Rashford’s influence against Real Madrid.
“Because 30 million euros in today’s market for a player with these attributes, these statistics, this experience… that is a bargain,” he said.
Koeman further claimed that Rashford’s pace, confidence, and attacking intensity overwhelmed Madrid throughout the encounter.
“Madrid appeared frightened every time he turned and sprinted. Against Real Madrid, he utterly overwhelmed them on the counter-attack,” he added.
The former Barcelona coach concluded by criticizing any hesitation over the proposed fee, insisting it would be “absurd” not to complete the signing.
Opinion: Rashford May Have Finally Found the Perfect Football Environment
For years, Marcus Rashford has been one of football’s most debated talents — brilliant on his day, but often inconsistent and burdened by enormous pressure at Manchester United FC.
But at FC Barcelona, things appear different.
His performance against Real Madrid was not just about scoring a free-kick. It was about confidence, freedom, and decisiveness — qualities many believed had disappeared from his game in recent years.
Ronald Koeman’s comments reflect what many fans are beginning to think: €30 million for a player with Rashford’s experience and quality genuinely looks like smart business in today’s inflated market.
What makes the situation more interesting is the tactical fit. Barcelona’s quick transitions and attacking movement seem to suit Rashford perfectly. His speed stretches defenses, while his direct style gives the team another dimension in big games.
Of course, one great performance should not erase previous struggles. Consistency remains the biggest question surrounding him. But sometimes players simply need the right environment to rediscover themselves.
Right now, Barcelona looks like that environment for Rashford. And if the club lets him walk away after seeing what he can do in matches of this magnitude, Koeman may eventually be proven right.
