Mofe Duncan Criticises Daddy Freeze Over Comments on Alex Ekubo’s Service of Songs

Nollywood actor Mofe Duncan has criticised media personality Daddy Freeze over his remarks concerning actor Alex Ekubo’s Service of Songs, insisting that the event was about celebrating the late actor’s life and not about personal opinions or disagreements.

The Service of Songs, held on Wednesday, June 10, at the Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, attracted several colleagues, friends, and loved ones who gathered to honour Alex Ekubo.

Daddy Freeze, who attended the event, became a topic of discussion after wearing black despite the announced white dress code. In a video shared on his Instagram page, he explained his choice of outfit and expressed disappointment with parts of the programme.

The media personality questioned the need for preaching at the gathering and criticised gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s performance, describing it as more like a concert. He said he eventually left the event, questioning whether people understood the meaning of a funeral ceremony.

Reacting to the comments, Mofe Duncan shared a lengthy post on Instagram, arguing that Daddy Freeze misunderstood the purpose of the occasion.

Duncan explained that the gathering was not a funeral but a night of tributes and a Service of Songs designed to celebrate Alex Ekubo’s life, faith, and personality.

According to him, the family had made it clear that Alex loved worship, meaning the musical aspect of the event reflected what the actor would have wanted.

“It was NOT a FUNERAL, it was a NIGHT OF TRIBUTES & A SERVICE OF SONGS,” Duncan wrote.

He also questioned Daddy Freeze’s criticism of the programme, saying the event featured hymns and worship sessions that were meaningful to those who attended.

Duncan further criticised Freeze for publicly expressing his displeasure, stating that the occasion should not have been centred around any individual’s expectations.

“You stepped GRAVELY out of line,” he wrote, adding that the night was meant to honour Alex and not become a debate about personal preferences.

The disagreement has sparked conversations online about how public figures should handle criticism of memorial events, with some supporting Duncan’s defence of the family’s wishes while others argue that attendees should be allowed to express their views.

At the centre of the debate remains one key point: a tribute event is ultimately shaped by the wishes of the person being remembered and the people closest to them.
