Luis de la Fuente Names Julián Álvarez as His Dream Signing for Spain Ahead of World Cup Clash

Luis de la Fuente has revealed the player he would love to add to his Spain national football team squad, with the coach surprisingly choosing Julián Álvarez ahead of some of the biggest attacking names in world football.

De la Fuente, who guided Spain to victory at UEFA Euro 2024, made the revelation while speaking to reporters ahead of Spain’s 2026 World Cup second group match against Saudi Arabia national football team in Atlanta.

Asked which player from another national team he would hypothetically sign for La Roja, the Spain boss selected Álvarez, who currently plays for Atlético de Madrid, instead of global superstars such as Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.

“Which player would I sign from another national team? Julián Álvarez. He’s a fantastic player,” De la Fuente said.

“For my idea, he’d fit perfectly; he’d be very important. Mbappé and Vinicius are great players, but in my footballing idea, he would fit perfectly.”

The choice highlights what De la Fuente values in a forward. While Mbappé and Vinícius are known for explosive pace and individual brilliance, Álvarez offers a different profile — intelligent movement, relentless pressing, technical ability and the versatility to operate in multiple attacking roles.

The Argentine striker’s work rate and tactical discipline have made him highly respected among coaches, and De la Fuente’s comments suggest that he sees Álvarez as the type of player who can elevate Spain’s attacking system.

It is also an interesting statement considering Spain already possess talented attackers of their own. Rather than choosing the most famous name available, De la Fuente appears to have prioritised a player who matches his football philosophy.

Álvarez’s rise continues to attract praise, and being identified as the ideal addition by a major international coach further underlines his growing reputation among the world’s elite players.
