YCee Opens Up About Mental Health Battle, Reveals Three-Month Hospitalisation During Difficult Period
Nigerian singer and rapper Oludemilade Martin Alejo, popularly known as YCee, has shared his experience with mental health struggles, revealing that he was diagnosed with a mental health condition in 2020.
The “Omo Alhaji” hitmaker opened up during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, explaining that the challenge played a role in his temporary break from the music industry.
YCee revealed that he spent several months in London during the lockdown period, including about three months in and out of hospital, before returning to Nigeria to continue his treatment and therapy.
“In 2020, I got diagnosed with a mental health condition during the lockdown. I was in London for six months and was in-and-out of hospital for about three months,” he said.
The rapper explained that after returning to Lagos, continuing his recovery journey was a long process involving medication, hospital visits and therapy.
“It was up and down. Sometimes it is looking good and sometimes, it just gets really dark,” YCee recalled.
He, however, revealed that he is now stable following treatment and continued therapy.
Opinion: YCee’s decision to speak openly about his mental health journey is a powerful reminder that public figures also face personal battles away from the spotlight. Conversations like this can help reduce stigma and encourage more people to seek support when dealing with mental health challenges.
