Roberto Martinez Insists Portugal Squad Has No ‘Substitutes’ Ahead of World Cup Knockout Push

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has expressed confidence that every member of his 26-man squad is ready to contribute as the Selecao das Quinas continues its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Portugal entered the tournament among the favourites due to the depth and quality within their squad, with Martinez insisting that all his players have the ability and fitness required to make an impact when called upon.

The team began their campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo but responded strongly by defeating tournament debutants Uzbekistan 5-0, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s final group stage match against Colombia, Martinez emphasized the importance of squad unity and rejected the idea of having regular starters and bench players.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone is ready. We have reached a stage where we can make three substitutions at half-time while maintaining the same tactical and technical quality,” Martinez said, according to O Jogo.

“Those on the bench are also prepared to make an impact. The word substitute does not exist in our team. All 26 players are ready.”

A victory over Colombia on June 28 would secure top spot in Group K for Portugal, with Martinez hoping for another strong performance from Ronaldo.

The Portuguese captain continues to make history, having become the only player to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.
