Ndidi Fires Warning Ahead of Portugal Clash, Says Super Eagles Are Ready for Major Test

Ndidi Fires Warning Ahead of Portugal Clash, Says Super Eagles Are Ready for Major Test

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has described Nigeria's upcoming friendly against Portugal as a crucial test of the team's growth and ambition under head coach Éric Chelle.

The highly anticipated encounter will take place on Wednesday in Leiria, with both sides looking to fine-tune their preparations ahead of future competitive assignments.

Nigeria heads into the fixture in impressive form, having recorded four wins and two draws in their last six matches. Since Éric Chelle took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025, the team has suffered just one defeat in regulation time across 24 matches, highlighting the remarkable progress made under the Franco-Malian tactician.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Ndidi acknowledged the quality of the Portuguese side but insisted that Nigeria is fully prepared for the challenge.

"It will be a very good test for us. We faced the first test against Poland, and Portugal is a great team with great players as well," the Leicester City midfielder said.

"It will be a massive test for us as a group, to our vision, to our aim as a team, to our growth. It will definitely be a good test for us."

The midfielder also stressed that the Super Eagles are approaching the game with confidence and a winning mentality regardless of the calibre of their opponents.

"We don't care who we are playing. Even if we are playing against the biggest countries in the world, the most important thing is that as players we are ready to win. We look forward to taking our philosophy and strategy into the game."

Wednesday's fixture also carries an element of revenge for Nigeria. The only previous meeting between the two nations ended in a humiliating 4-0 defeat for the Super Eagles four years ago, a result many fans have not forgotten.

More Than a Friendly for the Super Eagles

While the match may officially be classified as a friendly, it feels like much more for Nigeria. Facing a World Cup-bound Portugal side offers an opportunity to measure the team's development against one of Europe's football heavyweights.

Under Chelle, the Super Eagles have shown greater organization, resilience, and consistency. However, elite opposition such as Portugal provides the ultimate benchmark for determining whether the team's progress can translate onto the global stage.

Ndidi's comments reflect a growing confidence within the squad. Rather than approaching the game with fear or caution, the players appear eager to test themselves against top-class opponents and prove that Nigeria can compete with the very best.

A positive result would not only boost morale but also strengthen belief in the direction the team is heading. Even more important than the outcome may be the performance itself—showing discipline, tactical maturity, and the courage to impose their style against a world-class opponent.

For Nigerian football fans, Wednesday's clash represents a chance to see how far the Super Eagles have come since that painful 4-0 defeat. For Ndidi and his teammates, it is an opportunity to turn words into action and make a statement on the international stage.
