Stella Damasus has listed conditions for anyone hoping to be with her daughter, including that he must be obsessed with her. The list travelled quickly, and the replies split between agreement and a suggestion that a young man should instead be moulded.
Why this particular list travels
Because it inverts the usual direction of advice. The standing Nigerian genre is guidance aimed at women on how to be chosen, how to keep a home, and what to tolerate. A mother setting a floor for what her daughter should expect runs the other way, and that is what makes it shareable.
The serious version of the argument
| Position | What it assumes |
|---|---|
| Set a high floor | Character is largely formed by adulthood |
| Mould him | A good partner can be developed |
Both can be true of different people, which is why the argument never ends.
Advice to daughters is easy to circulate. The same standard applied to sons is the version that would change anything.
Damasus is not speaking from nowhere
She has spoken publicly before about her own marriages, including widowhood and a later divorce conducted largely in public. A woman who has been through Nigerian marriage under that level of scrutiny setting terms for her daughter is not offering theory.
The part worth keeping
Not the specific three conditions, which are hers and personal. The underlying move: a parent telling a daughter that she is allowed to have requirements, in a culture where the transmitted advice usually runs to patience and accommodation.
Whether her daughter uses the list is nobody's business. That it was said out loud, in public, by a mother with an audience, is the reason it was worth reporting at all.
