A Holiday Conversation With Lookman Sent Jonathan Rowe To Atalanta
Bergamo · Saturday 12 September 2026
Jonathan Rowe, the 23-year-old English winger who has joined Atalanta on loan from Bologna with an option to buy, says a holiday conversation with Ademola Lookman helped convince him. "I saw him on vacation, and he spoke highly of Atalanta," Rowe said. He has been given the number 11 shirt Lookman wore there.
The transfer market's least visible mechanism
Clubs spend heavily on scouting, agents and presentations. A great deal of the actual persuading happens between players, in private, with no club employee present and nobody able to script it. Atalanta did not arrange that holiday. They benefited from it anyway.
What the number means and does not mean
| Reading | Holds up? |
|---|---|
| A club marking continuity | Yes, and it is deliberate |
| Pressure on the new signing | Only if he invites it |
| A promise about performance | No |
Lookman himself moved to number 11 at Atletico Madrid for this season.
Inheriting a shirt is a compliment to the man who wore it, not a forecast about the man wearing it now.
The Nigerian angle that is easy to miss
Lookman's standing in Italian football is high enough that his casual opinion moves a transfer. That reputation is an asset for every Nigerian player who follows him into Serie A, and it is the kind of soft advantage no federation can manufacture. It gets built one hat-trick and one holiday conversation at a time.
