Semi Ajayi Takes The League's Best Defence To Stamford Bridge

Hull City go to Stamford Bridge this afternoon with seven points from three games, a joint league best defensive record, and Semi Ajayi expected to start in a back line alongside John Egan and Nobel Mendy. Chelsea have won four of Xabi Alonso's first five matches and have just lost 2-1 at Arsenal.

Ajayi's season. He has a goal already, which matters more than it sounds. A promoted side that defends deep needs its centre-halves to be a genuine threat at set pieces, because the open-play chances will not be there. That is the difference between a 0-0 and a 1-0.

Why Nigerians should watch this one

Because a Nigerian centre-half starting regularly in a Premier League side with the best defensive record in the division is an argument that makes itself, and because the Super Eagles have spent two years short of exactly that profile. Ajayi has been in and out of national team conversations for most of his career. Three clean sheets in a promoted team is a harder thing to ignore than good form in a mid-table one.

Beating Manchester United in September is what a promoted club is remembered for. Doing it without conceding is what gets its defenders called up.

The realistic expectation

Chelsea at home, with four wins in five, should win. Hull have already beaten a bigger name this month, and Alonso spent his week telling anyone who asked that his team gives up too much. If Hull take anything from this, the defensive record stops being a curiosity and starts being a story.
