Tobi Amusan finished second in the women's 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship on Friday night, clocking 12.34 seconds behind the American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won in 12.22. Nadine Visser of the Netherlands took third in 12.39.
Asked about the run afterwards, Amusan said she is not a robot. It is a short sentence and it covers a long season.
What second place is actually worth here
This championship exists because World Athletics wanted a meeting where the money was the headline. The pot is ten million dollars, the largest in the sport's history, and it is paid down the finishing order rather than to the podium alone.

Where the money comes from is the whole story
The D'Tigress were paid their AfroBasket reward this week, after a wait that ended only when three separate federal offices had signed. The Super Falcons are still waiting on the cash half of theirs. Those are promises made by a government, denominated in dollars, settled in naira whenever the paperwork clears.
Prize money attached to a finish line is a different instrument to prize money attached to a press conference. One is arithmetic. The other is goodwill.
Amusan's 75,000 dollars was fixed before she walked to the blocks. Nobody had to lobby for it, and no minister will be thanked for releasing it.
The performance underneath the payday
12.34 is not Amusan at her sharpest, and she has said as much in her own way. It was still quick enough to beat every hurdler in Budapest except the reigning Olympic champion, in the final week of a season that began in February. Consistency at that level, from an athlete Nigeria has leaned on for the better part of a decade, is the thing that tends to get noticed only once it stops.
