Abiodun Says The Governors Should Explain The Subsidy Money
Ijebu-Ode · Saturday 12 September 2026
Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun State, told an APC rally at the Dipo Dina International Stadium on Thursday that state governors rather than President Tinubu should explain how the gains from petrol subsidy removal are being spent, because the money reaches the states as increased allocations.
He is describing how the money actually moves
Subsidy removal raised the pool shared at federal, state and local level. The finance ministry has put the total mobilised for the federation at 15.8 trillion naira between June 2023 and December 2025. A large share of that has passed through state governments, which is exactly where the question of what was built with it belongs.
What accountability would look like
| Publish this | Why it settles the argument |
|---|---|
| Monthly allocation received, per state | Already public, rarely assembled |
| The rise against pre-2023 baseline | Isolates the subsidy effect |
| Named projects and contract sums | The only row that proves anything |
Two of these three exist. The third is the one that never appears.
Nigeria does not have a shortage of allocation figures. It has a shortage of sentences that connect a figure to a road.
The test Abiodun has set for himself
He said it at a campaign rally, which is the least binding venue available. The way to make it real is for Ogun to publish its own numbers first, in the format above, before anyone demands it. If that happens, the challenge to the other 35 states has force. If it does not, this was a good line on a Thursday.
