Rita Edochie has responded to online claims that she is suffering from arthritis after a video of her dancing circulated. The veteran actress questioned how her movements and an active lifestyle could be read as evidence of the condition, and said she remains strong and energetic.

Where these claims come from

Nowhere in particular, which is the point. A clip gets posted, somebody in the replies offers a diagnosis, the diagnosis is quoted as a claim, and within a day it is being reported as a thing people are saying. No stage of that process involves a doctor.

The pattern is specific to older women in public life. Male actors of the same age are read as energetic. Women are read as unwell, and the same video supports both conclusions depending on who is in it. Edochie's answer, which is a question about whether her critics' mothers could match her, lands exactly on that double standard.
