Streams Of Joy Gave Back The 1.6 Million Naira Sent By Mistake
Umuahia · Sunday 13 September 2026
Streams of Joy International, the church led by Pastor Jerry Eze, has refunded 1.64 million naira that Sandra Okpara transferred to its account by mistake. The church asked her to submit the transaction details through its official channels, investigated, confirmed the claim and returned the money.
Why this became a story at all
Because the expectation was that it would not happen. Nigerian churches receive enormous volumes of transfers with no reference and no way to match a payment to a person, and the assumption among most people watching was that 1.64 million naira sent into that stream was simply gone.
What made her case recoverable
| What she had | Why it mattered |
|---|---|
| The transaction reference | Made the payment findable |
| A public appeal | Got the request in front of someone |
| A single large amount | Stands out in a ledger |
Someone who sends 16,000 naira by mistake has none of the third.
The refund is good news. Needing to go public to get it is the part nobody should be relaxed about.
The banking question underneath
Nigeria's instant transfer system is fast, cheap and almost entirely unforgiving of a mistyped account number. There is a recall process, it depends on the receiving bank and the recipient's cooperation, and most people do not know it exists. A church behaving decently resolved this one. The system is what decides the ones that do not make the news.
