Danny Murphy: Only PSG Can Halt Arsenal’s Champions League Dream

Danny Murphy: Only PSG Can Halt Arsenal’s Champions League Dream

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes Arsenal’s march toward a historic Champions League triumph may only be stopped by one team — Paris Saint-Germain.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been nothing short of sensational in Europe this season. Six wins from six matches have underlined their authority in the competition, and they face another major test tonight when they travel to the San Siro to take on Inter Milan. Already, Arsenal have made a statement by dismantling European heavyweights Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium.

Away from home, the Gunners have been just as ruthless, scoring 11 goals against Sparta Prague, Athletic Bilbao, and Club Brugge — numbers that reflect not just form, but belief.

Despite leading the Premier League, Murphy insists Arsenal have every reason to aim higher. Speaking to BoyleSports, the former Liverpool man suggested that the North London club are capable of pulling off a rare and special double.

“I think if Arsenal only got the Premier League, they would accept it, but I also believe they can win the Champions League,” Murphy said.

He did, however, highlight the unforgiving nature of Europe’s elite competition, where fine margins often decide seasons.

“One bad game, a red card, penalties, or a wrong decision can knock you out. You can even play well and still go home.”

Murphy pointed to Arsenal’s demolition of Bayern Munich as evidence that they are ready to stand toe-to-toe with Europe’s giants. In his view, traditional powers no longer carry the same fear factor.

“They are performing better than any other team in the Premier League. I don’t think the Spanish teams are as strong as before.”

Still, one opponent remains firmly on his radar: PSG. The French champions eliminated Arsenal in last season’s semi-finals and went on to lift the trophy — experience Murphy believes could be decisive once again.

“The only team that worries me is PSG. When they’re fit and playing at their best, they’re really hard to beat for any team.”

Opinion: Arsenal’s Time to Dream — and Dare

What stands out most in Murphy’s assessment is not just Arsenal’s quality, but their mentality. This Arsenal side does not look like a team hoping for success — they look like one expecting it.

Arteta has built a group that plays with authority, calmness, and fearlessness. Whether at home or away, against big names or underdogs, Arsenal impose themselves. That sense of quiet confidence is often the difference between contenders and champions.

PSG may indeed be the final boss — battle-tested, experienced, and capable of punishing any lapse. But football history rewards teams brave enough to “reach for the stars,” as Murphy put it. Arsenal appear ready to do just that.

If belief truly shapes destiny in Europe, then Arsenal are no longer outsiders dreaming of glory — they are genuine hunters of it. The question now is not whether they can win the Champions League, but whether anyone can stop them when it matters most.
